Research in Motion has some big plans for 2009 when it comes to music downloads and content. RIM's co-CEO Jim Balsille made some comments recently at a music industry conference in Cannes, France that made some heads turn.
“We’ve moved to [music] 2.0, where music is undergoing a radical transformation and it creates a remarkable new opportunity for content owners to monetize their content… [BlackBerry is] already very music centric, what were talking about now is our platform”, said Balisille referring to the BlackBerry Application Centre. “We’re ingesting apps now and it goes online in March… [It has] a billing engine and is a channel for developers - you’ll see dozens of music apps.”
He also said, “we are the overwhelming market leaders and we’ve been in the smartphone business for years… The Storm is a BlackBerry with different packaging, not a competitor of iPhone.” Tell me honestly, does anyone really think that the Storm is not a competitor to the iPhone?
So, let me get this straight... Storm is not a competitor to the iPhone and yet you are talking about toppling Apple who is the biggest music seller in the world? Am I missing something here?
iPhone App Review: 'Restaurant' is a must for anyone who eats out
This has to be one of the best apps for anyone regardless of age. If you own the iPhone or the iPod Touch then I recommend the Restaurant App from the Apple Apps Store.
This one is free and a great way to know exactly what you are eating the next time that you are out at a fast food or a major chain restaurant. Updates are done regularly as menus change and new brands are also added regularly.
Want to decide what's healthier at McDonald's - a Big Mac or 6 piece nuggets? Just click on your Restaurant app and select McDonalds to get full nutritional information, including caloric and fat content.
Non-fast food chains are also included such as Chili's, Ruby Tuesday, and Pei Wei (my favorite!). There's even pizza menu information for chains such as Papa John's and Pizza Hut.
All in all, this is app is a must-have for everyone who is interested in keeping in shape and wanting to know exactly what they are eating. Go and download for your iPhone or iPod Touch today.
I have't used the word groovy in a long time but that's exactly what I would use to describe the new Apple App for iPhone and iPod Touch.
Available for download for only $0.99 from Toejam Software LLC, this one is fun and a great way to know your mood throughout the day.
Are you happy? Are you sad? This app uses special sensors in-built in your iPod Touch and iPhoneto sense your mood. Your color reading is accompanied by a few words that will describe your mood as well.
All in all, good fun and a great fun app from the Apple Apps Store.
Skype recently announced the availability of Skype lite for the Android Phone as a free download. Skype Lite is also available for several phones that support Java. Skype lets you make free local calls over standard voice channels then convert it to VOIP, allowing international calls to be made at local call rates. “Call on Skype wherever you are - no WiFi or 3G required” You can use Skype for Instant messaging and to make phone calls and not use up all your minutes. And if you're wondering if Skype will be release for iPhone, signs point to yes and it might be available for the iPod Touch as well. An iPhone version of Skype is still undergoing development but will soon be available as well. However the approval of Skype from the App Store might delay it's availability. Skype is a good app to have and a convenient way to save money in these hard economic times. So far over 370 million users have signed up to Skype and an estimated 30 million new users joining each quarter.
Skype has released a version for Apple's Mac computers this week, and will release another version for Windows in February. There will also be an open source version for small intel-based computers running Linux software.

Apple seems to be an easy target for lawsuits, and frankly people it's getting old! I guess when you have nothing better to do why not go and sue Apple? This time EMG Technology is suing Apple for the infringement of a patent for the way that it displays webpages. The iPhone's web browser is based on Safari, and displays a smaller version of the web page, without manipulating it. EMG's patent "covers the simplified interface of reformatted mobile content to provide optimum viewing and navigation with single touches on a small screen" says Stanley Gibson, EMG's lawyer. On the other hand, other phones do manipulate pages in order to make them more easy to read. So why is EMG only going after Apple for this? It's funny, when Stanley Gibson, was asked, he responded, "We haven't looked at anything other than the iPhone. That was the device that we looked at. Obviously it's very popular." Umm.. yeah, that reason doesn't sound fair at all. Besides, EMG just barely obtained this patent last month, and how long has the iPhone been around for? Sounds to me like these people don't have a case.
Could be Google's most innovative and groundbreaking app to date and it goes directly to the iPhone completely disregarding Google's own Android based G1, no questions asked & no looking back. This app allows users to say a search query into their phone and have it transcribed and returned as a Web search.
"I want to bring the most valuable applications to as many users as possible," said Gummi Hafsteinsson, senior product manager for the mobile team. "We treat all high-end [mobile] platforms equally." The G1 does come equipped with voice dialing something the iPhone lacks, but, there is no possible voice search of this magnitude available for download for the G1. "We're obviously working hard to add as many devices as possible," Hafsteinsson said. Let's all keep our fingers crossed, in hopes that the G1 does eventually get graced with this life altering app a.s.a.p.....As for the iphone, Google's voice app was supposed to be available for download last friday 11/14 and has been delayed until today.
Orange France has reduced the price of the 8GB iPhone to 99€ and the 16GB for 129€. Looks like the french are getting their Christmas earlier this year. These prices are only valid with a purchase of a new service agreement. According to the flyer above from AppleInsider, a 2 year agreement is required to be able to get the iPhone priced so low. Although this pricing might be new to the french, rumor is that Hungary, Spain, Finland, and possibly Switzerland already have the iPhone at a lower price. Hopefully these prices come to the US too.

According to Silicone Alley Insider there are some leaked new documents showing that the 2.2 update to the iPhone will include a way to download songs over-the-air.
MacRumors shows leaked screenshots showing an iPhone user downloading a podcast from iTunes via 3G connection.
Smule has developed an application, Ocarina, that allows iPhone users to literally play their iPhone like a flute. This app is truly another reason that makes the iPhone wanted so much, among so many apps available for it, Ocarina is only available for the Apple iPhone, and nothing points to Smule making it available a on any other platform, any time soon. Check out the app in action below.

Cutting straight to the chase, data from NPD Group showed that Apple's iPhone knocked Motorola's Razr off the number one spot for the top-selling mobile phone. The Motorola Razr, having a straight consecutive lead for three years, came in at second place. Blackberry Curve won third place, and following it was LG's Rumor and Env2.
Once again the notorious iPhone, reeks havoc in the mobile industry. All these iPhone wins are making me want one, am I the only one? NPD analyst, Ross Rubin stated that, “Four of the five best-selling handsets in the third quarter were optimized for messaging and other advanced Internet features”. Uh...duh! Everybody is getting phones that at least give you all the options for messaging, and who can live without the internet. Other features on a phone that are becoming or should become standard are bluetooth, some kind of qwerty keyboard, music player and a camera. Which explains why 83% of phones sold in the 3rd quarter, were Bluetooth enabled, 70% were music enabled and 43% had a camera.
In the smartphone category, RIM is still top dogg, because of the subsidies, but will RIM keep this top spot on the smartphone category or will iPhone come and take RIM's first place too?

A while back it seemed as if AT&T was worried about the overpopulated 3G network, and how tethering an iPhone would play off. Well now it looks like the worries are gone. AT&T President and CEO Ralph De La Vega stated in an interview at the Web 2.0 Summit, that the company is working with Apple to let the iPhone serve as a tethered wireless modem for laptops soon. Unfortunately, there is no info yet on the actual effective date nor the pricing. If you are anxious and simply cannot wait for it, there are a few other known options like using PDANet. If you can jailbreak your phone it will probably be easier (and cheaper) to stick with using other alternatives for tethering your phone. Unless AT&T offers the tethering service for a real low price, I doubt many will switch to tethering that will cost them money as opposed to none. Then again a lot of people might just want to play tby the rules and avoid any problems.... yeah right.
The iPhone takeover is still gaining strength now with a new report from JD Power and Associates. JD Power and Associates, a really important and big boss business, ranked the iPhone highest in customer satisfaction for business wireless smartphone users. Apple set out to build a smartphone for consumers that hopefully business users would eventually adopt and it worked! Apple beats RIM again.
Blackberry has something more to worry about. If being outsold wasn't enough, iPhone overtaking Blackberry territory will do it. IPhone scored 778 out of a scale of 1000. Blackberry came in second, scoring only 703. This survey is significant due to two reasons, JD Power has a good reputation for reliable research and this survey mainly concentrated on business users. This study is based on responses from 1,388 business wireless customers who currently own a smartphone device. The study was conducted between August and September 2008.
